Worlds Largest Radio Telescope - Manufactured Various Components
SKA – Square Kilometre Array – Radio Telescope – General Dynamics USA - Machined and Fabricated Components
Our Role
Westar Manufacturing supplied various Machined and Fabricated components for the telescopes.
The Project
The SKA project is an international effort to build the world's largest radio telescope, with a square kilometre (one million square metres) of collecting area.
The scale of the SKA represents a huge leap forward in both engineering and research & development towards building and delivering a radio telescope, and will deliver a correspondingly transformational increase in science capability when operational.
Deploying thousands of radio telescopes, in three unique configurations, it will enable astronomers to monitor the sky in unprecedented detail and survey the entire sky thousands of times faster than any system currently in existence.
Challenges
One of the main challenge was to machine and supply the Upper and Lower universal joints to rotate the elevation and azimuth 40 ton dish in the shortest possible lead time for the first 5 off units.
Successes
Despite the challenges, we manage to produce the required high quality components within the tight timeframe.
Client Feedback
“It has been a pleasure to work hand in hand with Westar Manufacturing on the MeerKAT project. Your approach was always proactive, forward thinking, cost-conscious and transparent. I would do it again in a heartbeat and look forward to any opportunity that would lend itself to us working together in the future.”
